Referring to previous correspon-

-dence, terminating in my Despatch No. 22 of the 8th.

February, 1907, on the subject of the promotion of Mr. T.

Sercombe Smith to be Puisne Judge in the Straits Settle-

-nents, I have now the honour to recommend that the appoint-

-ment of First Police Magistrate a Hongkong rendered

vacant thereby be filled by the promotion to it of Mr.

H. H. J. Gompertz, whose substantive appointment is that

of Assistant Colonial Secretary, and who has been acting

since the 1st. Novemberlast as Attorney-General in a

manner satisfactory to me. Mr. Gompertz's past services

are fully set out on page 216 of the Hongkong Civil Service
